SHP welcomed the 2024 Fairfax beekeeping class participants on the final event of their course for a hands-on learning experience in the bee yard. While working side by side with SHP beekeepers to inspect hives, students learned about the beekeeping techniques used at SHP, such as working with nucs, and using quiet cloths and quiet boxes.
Students were also able to practice lighting their smokers, identifying eggs and brood, and spotting the queen. The field day is a great way to give new beekeepers exposure to working in the bee yard before they set off to work on their own hives.
